W Beam vs Thrie Beam Crash Barrier: Which One Suits Your Highway?
By Hitesh Lunnia · Director · 1 min read
Where W Beam is sufficient: divided national highways with regular passenger vehicle traffic, urban roads, ghats, embankments below 6 metres, medians on flat alignments. W Beam typically meets containment levels W1 to W4.
Where Thrie Beam is preferred: high-speed expressways with significant heavy commercial vehicle traffic, sharp curves, bridge approaches, hill roads with steep drops, locations needing W5 / W6 / H1 containment. Thrie Beam provides better redirection of buses and trucks and reduces the chance of vehicles vaulting over the barrier.
Cost difference: Thrie Beam typically costs 20 to 35 percent more than W Beam per running metre due to the heavier rail and posts. The premium is justified at high-risk locations where containment performance directly affects fatality rates.
Auroguard manufactures both W Beam and Thrie Beam crash barriers to NHAI, MORTH and IRC specifications, with full transition piece supply for sections where the highway shifts between barrier types. Send your project location, traffic mix and any consultant recommendation to our desk and we will help you specify the right barrier for the right stretch.
